    NATO is ending anyway. Plans for a European army are well advanced and that leaves no room for US bases.

    I believe Europeans want US bases. This is free defense for them.

    At this point they are not prepared to genuflect to Trump. And bases provide very little defense. Most NATO countries are forming other alliances, especially when it comes to military spending. The pity is that this could have been avoided. Trump always insults allies. With Iran there was no consultation and then he complained that no-one supported him.

    Many of the countries who broke off from the Soviet block have been signaling the U.S. that if we are going to move some bases they are willing to take us in! Why would we be willing to keep supporting the economies of those countries who don’t want to engage when they are needed?
