Since January 2025, the US foreign-born population has declined by roughly 1.3 million people, with more immigrants leaving than arriving, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. More specifically, around 1.6 million “illegal aliens” left the country by mid-August 2025, with over 1 million immigrants leaving the US workforce alone in the first seven months of the year.
Here’s a breakdown of the data:
-
Net population decline:The overall foreign-born population in the US decreased by over a million people between January and June 2025, marking the first decline since the 1960s.
-
“Illegal alien” departures:By mid-August 2025, Secretary Noem of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that 1.6 million “illegal aliens” had left the country, driven by increased enforcement and a global advertising campaign warning them to leave or face arrest.
-
Labor force departures:Over 1.2 million immigrants left the US labor force between January and July 2025, including legal residents and those in the country without authorization.
-
Deportations:The Department of Homeland Security reported over 132,000 deportations through the CBP, along with about 17,500 self-deportations, totaling nearly 350,000 deportations in the first seven months of the year.
