Nationwide estimates and major city data show a sharp drop. In a sample of 35 major U.S. cities (which often drive national trends), homicides fell by about 21% from 2024 to 2025—the largest single-year drop on record. This translates to roughly 922 fewer murders in those cities alone. Reports indicate the national murder rate in 2025 may have reached its lowest level since 1900 (or at least since the early 20th century in available records), continuing a multi-year downward trend after the 2020 surge.
