US continued to dominate in both the gold medal and particularly  overall medal count with 113 medals in all. However, in Rio US won 121 medals in total, 8 more than during these games. It is not clear why the total medal count went down since Rio Olympics even though there were several new sports and more medal opportunities this time. Some of the lessons learned from these Olympics is that the US team needs more and better sport psychologists. Top ranked Simone Biles withdrawing from most of the events due to mental problems is a sign that the team needs more and better psychologists providing CBT (cognitive behavioral therapies).

Men’s track and field team lost multiple opportunities to win medals, and Track and Field star Carl Lewis wrote a scathing article about the need for better training and preparation.

Some teams, like top seated gold medal contender, women’s soccer team, did not  perform to their potential and settled for bronze. This largely could be because the team was torn apart by politics. Some women were kneeling before the games and some proudly stood for the US anthem with their hand on the heart. Currently, 350 franchisees of the Subway food chain featuring Megan Rapinoe in their commercials are demanding to drop her commercials as she is extremely critical of the US. “Rapinoe, who is recognizable for her purple hair, has given many indigestion for her national anthem kneeling, appearing to stomp on the American flag during the 2019 World Cup finals, and for her open disrespect for then-President Donald J. Probably, it was better for the team to concentrate on winning the gold and leaving the politics of the field.

Next year’s winter Olympics in China would not be easy for the US. Typically, US does better in summer Olympics than in winter Olympics, as the US total medal count is bayou-ed with the large number of medals in swimming and track and field, which of course we do not have in winter Olympics. Additionally Chinese athletes are expected to do very well on their home turf. So, it is time for the US winter Olympics team and 2024 summer Olympics team to  start working hard on performance and cohesiveness of the teams and possibly for the US government to support the athletes.
