US HAS A DUTY TO RE-SUPPLY UKRAINE’S BOMBERS AND CRUISE MISSILES IT PRESSURED UKRAINE TO GIVE UP AND DESTROY BETWEEN 1991-2014 AND PEACE AGREEMENT BETWEEN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE IS POSSIBLE
From 1991-2014 US has applied pressure on Ukraine to give up and destroy all of its bombers and air launched cruise missiles.
In 1991 US, Russia and Ukraine signed Start 1 treaty, where Ukraine agreed not only to give up its nuclear weapons, which it transferred to Russia, but also to give up delivery systems, such as bombers and cruise missiles.
ArmsControls.org reported “After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine agreed to rid itself of the nuclear weapons left on its soil by joining the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear-weapon state and by becoming a START I party. In June 1996, Kiev announced that the last of its estimated 3,000 tactical and 2,000 strategic nuclear warheads had been transferred to Russia.
Since 1997, under the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program, the United States has assisted Ukraine with dismantling remaining heavy bombers, strategic air-launched cruise missiles, and ICBMs and associated silos and launch-control centers.
The CTR program will also help Ukraine eliminate its Tu-22M Backfire bombers, Tu-134 combat trainers, and Kh-22 air-launched cruise missiles. According to Defense Threat Reduction Agency spokesman Bob Bennett, although these weapons systems are not covered by the START agreement, given their capabilities, the United States feels it is “advantageous” to assist Ukraine with their dismantlement. CTR efforts in Ukraine are expected to be concluded by 2007″
If US were not to pressure Ukraine to give up all of its bombers and cruise missiles, Putin might have thought twice before invading Ukraine, and if he were to invade, Ukraine could use its bombers and cruise missiles to destroy Putin’s convoys at the border, they likely would not have advanced to the heavily populated areas of Kyiv, Kharkov and Mariupol.
Because US pressured Ukraine to give up those weapons, it has a duty and a moral obligation to re-supply them. If we do not re-supply Ukraine, our word, the full faith and credit of the US government will have zero value in international arena. No state, business or individual would trust us anymore.
Furthermore, while some parties appear to be interested in a lengthy war, the people of Ukraine and Russia, and the international community will benefit from a quick resolution of this conflict.
Supply of bombers, cruise missiles and MIGs to Ukraine can actually be a deterrent and a catalyst for Putin to soften his stand in cease fire and peace negotiations and diplomatic resolution can and will be found.
Putin presented Zelensky with four demands: end of fighting, Ukraine agreeing not to join NATO, Ukraine recognizing independence of Donetsk and Lugansk republics and recognition of Crimea as part of Russia.
First condition, end of fighting. Zelensky is willing to end fighting, provided that Russia does the same and withdraws its troops. This is doable
Second condition. Ukraine is currently not a member of NATO and Zelensky stated that he is willing to consider making such an agreement as he feels that NATO itself is not willing to expand to such a hot spot as Ukraine.
Third condition- Recognition of Lugansk and Donetsk republics. Zelensky stated that he is considering it. Russia claims that some 13,000 ethnic Russian, including some 500 children, were killed in the last few years in Donbas region by Ukrainian nationalists. Regardless of whether these numbers are correct or inflated, there are diplomatic solutions. For example, UN can step in and UN peace keeping forces can be deployed in Donbas region to diffuse the situation and end fighting between ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians in the region.
Lastly, the fourth condition, is probably the toughest, demand for Ukraine to recognize Crimea as part of Russia. Crimean peninsula has a population of about 2 million people. 65% of Crimeans are ethnic Russians, the rest are half Crimean Tatars and half Ukrainians.
Russia claims that Crimea belongs to it, that Russian empire won Crimea in Russian-Turkish war in 1783, nearly 250 years ago. In 1954, when both Russia and Ukraine were a part of the Soviet Union, Nkita Khrushev, an ethnic Ukrainian Soviet leader, made a non-binding declaration, pronouncing Crimea to be a part of Ukraine. In 2014, when Ukraine became a Western ally, the people of Crimea held a referendum, where allegedly some 95% voted to succeed from Ukraine and join Russian Federation.
Ukraine believes Crimea to be a part of Ukraine and it questions the results of the Crimean referendum.
So, what is the diplomatic solution out of this quagmire?
I believe that both Russia and Ukraine will agree to another referendum in Crimea to be observed by Russians, Ukrainians and UN. Russia will agree to this referendum, as it will bet that majority of ethnic Russians will vote to stay in Russian Federation. Ukraine might agree to the referendum in order to find a diplomatic and democratic end to the war. Additionally, Ukraine will bet that even ethnic Russians might vote to succeed from Russia due to their desire to live in more democratic and prosperous West. There is an additional advantage to Ukraine, if the border conflicts are settled and borders are agreed upon, EU might be willing to accept Ukraine. Currently, one of EU’s hesitations, is lack of clear borders. Joining EU will help economic development of Ukraine.
Peaceful referendums work. Recently, in a peaceful referendum, the people of Great Britain voted to leave the European Union. People of Puerto Rico voted twice to remain in the US, as a territory. I believe that a referendum in Crimea, observed by Russia, Ukraine and EU might provide the final resolution of the last sticking point in Russian -Ukrainian peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law on Thursday that will allow the nationalization of all Russian-owned property in Ukraine without any compensation to its owners.
The decision to “forcibly confiscate” property owned by the Russian Federation and its residents had been made by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, a government statement said, “given the full-scale aggressive war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”
