NEW California runoff system an infringement of speech and association
chris@strunk.ws 7:23 AM (11 minutes ago)

The new top two winner runoff is an infringement of speech and association wherein the incumbent picks her opposition candidate in that the supporters of the incumbent may poach by voting for whomever they wish in the selection below and thereby include targeting support for the GOP Central committee choice to knockoff a real threat.
The various associations are prevented from selecting a candidate without interference from both outside and within the non voters of the party or association to represent them against the incumbent. This is a 14th Amendment issue of serious proportions!!
It is especially bad since what should be a party member primary vote choice ONLY was overshadowed when the GOP central committee decided to endorse EMKEN over and against all other party members who are candidates. By doing so the GOP central committee thereby caused voting panic among its members (as if this were the general election instead of just a party primary) thereby interfering with their own party primary, and in effect interfered in the same way as WiFi did by sending here party members in to vote for the GOP Central committee choice too.

This is not a new system. Jungle primaries have existed in Louisiana for years without issues. It places candidate over party. For example, what if the top two candidates were both Republicans – it gives a chance to all voters regardless of party registration to vote for the best candidate. In a normal system, you are limited to the party. Yes it can be abused, but that is purely speculative.

Not sure how Strunk gets to an “incumbant gets to pick their challenger.” That makes no sense. First, anyone can switch affiliation and vote for the other party in a regular system. Second, Feinstein obviously had a lot of folks voting for her as she pretty much got as many votes as everyone else combined. Third, does he have proof that Feinstein did the very picking of her challenger? No, he does not.

Lastly, a jungle primary system takes the control out of the party chiefs as anyone can jump in the primary regardless of what the major parties want.
