The rate of infections is much higher than previously believed.

At the press-conference today Cuomo stated that antibodies tests show that 22% in the city of NY and 13.9% state wide were infected, that is 2.7 mln people and the death rate is only 0.5%. It is also a shocking number of total infection. 22% in the city of NY means that nearly every fourth person in the city was infected. Incidentally, herd immunity is achieved at around 70%. That means that with 70% of people in the community with antibodies, there isn’t enough people to sustain the epidemic and the epidemic dies down. European studies also showed around 15% infection.

With 15,500 total deaths in the state of New York out of 2.7 million infected significantly lowers Covid mortality to 0.5%, similar to regular flu. This is an indication that we should start re-opening the country as we do not shut down the economy for the flu with the same death rate.

Additional good news, the number of daily deaths in the epicenter of the epidemic in US, NY state, is about half of what it was at the height of the epidemic. Around April 4th daily deaths in New York state were around 800 deaths per day. Today it is down to 437, about 50% reduction.

Now, extrapolating NY’s infection rate number to other states, we can assume that the real number of infected people in California, for example, that means that 5.6 million are infected. California had 1,438 deaths.  So, it would put the death rate in California at 0.025%, very low .

Nation -wide 13.9% of infection means that a staggering number of 45,870,000 of American in all were infected. This means that 48,200 deaths in US make up 0.1% of all infected people. This is a very low percentage, similar to flu.
