Romney makes a birther joke in Michigan: ‘No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate’

(John Moore/Getty Images)Mitt Romney made a joke about the so-called “birther” conspiracies that question whether President Barack Obama is an American citizen, telling a crowd in his home state of Michigan that no one has ever questioned his birthplace.

“No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate,” Romney said at a rally in Commerce, Mich., as he campaigned alongside his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan. Referring to his wife, Ann, who is also a Michigan native, Romney said, “They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”

Kevin Madden, a senior Romney adviser, downplayed the GOP candidate’s comments, saying he was only making reference to the fact that he was campaigning in his home state.

“The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States,” Madden said in an email to Yahoo News.

Indeed, Romney has long declined to become involved in conspiracies about Obama’s birthplace, calling the debate a distraction from real issues. But he hasn’t exactly condemned supporters who have continued to question whether Obama is really an American citizen. That list includes Donald Trump, a high profile Romney supporter who has helped raise cash for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Asked in May if he is “comfortable” with Trump’s suggestions that Obama wasn’t born in the United States, Romney got a bit irritated.

“You know, I don’t agree with all the people who support me, and my guess is that they don’t all agree with everything I believe in,” Romney told reporters on his campaign plane. “But I need to get to 50.1 percent or more, and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people.”

The Obama campaign quickly pounced on Romney’s remark, accusing him of siding with extremists in his party.

“Throughout this campaign, Gov. Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them,” Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in an email to reporters. “Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.”

Romney’s comment technically wasn’t true. As Politico’s Maggie Haberman quickly noted on Twitter, reporters asked to see copies of Romney’s birth certificate during the 2008 campaign—not to see his birthplace but rather to verify his full name.

    Yes! I heard that on radio shows and on CNN this afternoon, with the Wolfer (Wolf Blitzkrieg) himself! And did everyone notice how GREAT THE REACTION was when Romney discussed his own birth certificate? They knew what he meant. Which means: Romney, don’t be afraid to talk about the B.C. any time!!! It’ll drive ’em nuts!!! LOL! 🙂

    Wouldn’t be Great if the main topic at the Republican National Convention became Barry Sortasneky’s lack of any SOLID, BONA FIDE, AND UNREFUTED legal Document proving who Barry Sortasneaky is, or who Barry Sortasneaky isn’t.

    If they, the Delegates got all over that issue and fully discussed it, it would make for a very, very exciting Convention.

    It seems as if, every time anybody mentions anything about Birth Certificates or Social Security Numbers, the CROWD CHEERS.

    I hope they keep the CROWD CHEERING at the Convention.

    Obama resigns rather than face humiliating legal action (which probably cannot even be avoided by him anymore..unless he exerts his rights as a Kenyan citizen and takes up residence there!)

    Gee…many of us read this on Greta Blog eons ago..Greta’s readers were right! So are Sharon’s and, of course, Orly’s!

    Mr. Romney, I did not send you that questionnaire which you were asked to put before Obama. I sent it because you are dealing, not with a gentleman or an American, but with a hardened criminal who would tear our democracy to shreds if he wins. He has done a lot of that already. Please stop with the nice cordial way of doing business with a man who has taken us to the edge of the abyss with loads of our money, and with a hearty criminal record.

    If you do not believe me, then for God’s sake, watch the video that is now going around exposing several democrats in congress. These congressmen tried in vain to alter the constitution’s reference to Native Born American to cover for Obama being being born in Kenya. They failed in their attempt, but the point is, they knew he was not an American.

    If you cannot accept your opponent for what he is, please resign your nomination and ask Ryan to take the wheel. This is too serious to allow niceness to ruin America.

    You have been nothing but a disappointment to most of us who have supported you financially, and given you reference documentation to send Obama packing.

    I will now repeat the some of those words you gave Senator Reid. Either become the nominee America sorely needs to save this country, or stand down and give the Republicans a chance to save America for you.

    There’s many things in addition to the BC that Romney and the Republicans should be talking about that will drive them crazy. Obama should be asked to prove that he is a US citizen and they should explain why that question is necessary. He should be asked why he uses an SSN that was issued to someone else. Dr. Orly Taitz has a long list of items that the Republicans should be discussing daily and their campaign ads should be spreading them all over the country. The Republicans have a winning hand, I hope they can find the courage to use it.

    Mitt Romney, I was not a supporter of yours when you were running against other Republicans. Frankly, I wanted Newt because of his outspokenness. But I have to say that I’m proud that you’re running for President and that you’ll represent me. Your pick of Ryan for Veep and your unabashed and unafraid speech in which you brought up the birth certificate has brought you up my ladder of respect and praise of you. You’re beginning to sound more and more like Ronald Reagan.

    There is no reasons for hope in a good will and aspirations for the triumph of the Justice in Romney, Ryan, and the entire GOP. Up to this moment their goal remains to sweep the Truth and Justice under the rug forever.

    They will not change their mind and their treasonous mission under pressure of facts. Only if we succeed to exert a tremendous pressure on them, they may possibly concede…

    The GOP, Romney, Ryan, and every of 535 members of the Congress have no shame: even now. Now America has reached the stage when the truth is finally out, when the proofs of Obama’s crimes and forgeries have been officially reported – but there is nobody on the receiving end. No government institution, nor any politician is willing to handle the truth! Worse: they all are in collusion of the denial no matter what.

    This is a stage of an extreme dishonor of this nation. Only a tremendous pressure of patriots onto this totalitarian corrupt machine can possibly reverse the course (and the curse).

    At this point in time we must work within the present system for Change.

    If we just say everything and everybody is bad it’s only going to go from bad to worse.

    I for one don’t want to see that happen.

    Giving up is never a good solution.
