    Dear Orly,

What a beautiful song – what a beautiful singer.

Could you tell us, please, what some of the words mean?

After watching this videos I was wondering if the Moldavians like to consume vast quantity of spirits. I did some checking and they have a massive wine industry and the highest alcohol consumption per capita of any country in the world! Guess all that glass hoisting in not a accident after all! Wine is good for the heart any way.

Melancolie (Melancholia) sung by Sofia Rotaru.
A Romanian song written by Grigore Vieru (from Pererita, Moldavia)

Eu nu mă-ntreb de unde vine, vine
De unde doru-şi ia izvorul, dorul
Mă luminez şi-mi pare bine, bine
Când vine dorul, când dorul vine..

    Melancolie, dulce melodie,
    Melancolie, misterios amor,
    Melancolie, melancolie,
    Din armonia inimii cu dor

Mai drag mi-a amorul meu târziu, mai dragă
Mai dragă mi-e mândruţa dragă, dragă
Mai drag mi-e codrul şi izvorul, dorul
Când vine dorul, când dorul vine..

    Melancolie, dulce melodie,
    Melancolie, misterios amor,
    Melancolie, melancolie,
    Din armonia inimii cu dor

    English Translation:

I’m not curious from where it comes, from where
From where the longing takes its source, longing
    I’m shining and I’m glad, I’m glad
When longing comes, when longing comes…

    Melancholy, sweet melody,
    Melancholy, mysterious love,
    Melancholy, melancholy,
In harmony with the longing heart

My late love is so dear to me, my dear
My girl is so dear to me, dear
The forest and the source are so dear to me, the longing
When longing comes, when it comes…

    Melancholy, sweet melody,
    Melancholy, mysterious love,
    Melancholy, melancholy,
In harmony with the longing heart
