There has never been an automatic right to U.S. citizenship base on birth on U.S. soil alone. A simple reading of the contemporary congressional debates and discussions during the ratification of the fourteenth amendment, (from which this current fallacy originates), will make that fact perfectly clear, for those just to ignorant and illiterate to comprehend the full meaning of the included phrase “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof”. This is intended as a reference to the country possessing jurisdiction over the citizenship of the child by virtue of the citizenship of the parents. A child can only be what the parents are.

It is completely irrational and senseless to presume the United States would claim the citizens of foreign nations simply because they had the misfortune of being born on U.S. soil, or to grant citizenship to children whose parents are here illegally for that purpose, especially when considering there is no way to assure their allegiance.
