MI GOP filed an opposition to recount

Posted on | December 1, 2016 | 3 Comments

Friends,

Thank you for bearing with us as we navigate these uncharted waters. Michigan has not conducted a statewide recount in recent history, and a recount petition filed by a candidate who received 1% of the vote is unprecedented. Rest assured, your team at the Michigan Republican Party is working nonstop to make sure that your vote is protected.

In an effort to keep you informed on what is happening, we are providing you with some updated talking points. Please know that we are getting information to you as quickly as possible and we will continue to keep you updated.

Thank you for all that you are doing! If you have not yet, please visit migop.org/recountto sign up for a volunteer shift today.

  • Today, we filed an objection with the Michigan Board of Canvassers arguing that the recount petition filed by Jill Stein should be denied.
  • Our objection sites multiple reasons:
    • Jill Stein is not an “aggrieved” party, as one must be to file for a recount in Michigan.
      • An aggrieved party must believe that they can change the outcome of the election, and Jill Stein herself has acknowledged that she does not believe the results will change.
      • An aggrieved party must give specific evidence of fraud or wrongdoing. The Stein campaign has provided neither.
  • We FIRMLY believe that this recount should not go forward. It is an absolute waste of time, and more importantly, Michigan taxpayer dollars. Our votes were tabulated and the results were certified.
  • The next part of our objection is that, a hand recount cannot finish in time for Michigan to have our Electoral College votes counted.
    • The Stein campaign waited until the last possible minute to file their petition for recount.
    • They are asking for the costliest and more time-consuming recount process.
    • A hand recount of Michigan’s votes cannot possibly be completed in time, and the process will lead to errors. Poll workers will need to work with tremendous speed for long hours, and mistakes are inevitable.
    • There is no way of reliably counting ballots by hand, nor is there any reason to as machines are more reliable and less likely to create opportunity for fraud than human error.
    • If a hand recount is done, not only is there is grave risk of human error, it also cannot be completed prior to the December 13 safe harbor date that ensures the seating of our electors at the electoral college.
    • There is no reason to believe that even a machine recount could be completed by Dec. 13th, but it would be a better option.
  • The objection also states that Stein’s recount petition was not validly notarized, and therefore, is invalid. Stein’s petition was notarized in Massachusetts and left out critical requirements. Per Michigan law, the flaw in the notarization should cause the recount petition to be rejected.
  • The Clinton campaign has sent an email to Michiganders asking them to volunteer on Secretary Clinton’s behalf in the recount, stating that they are interested in protecting the votes cast for Clinton in Michigan. The best way to protect those votes is to end the recount. The votes were counted and certified. The Clinton campaign and all Michigan Democrats should call for an immediate end to this recount.

This process is ongoing. Thank you for your help! If you have not, please visit migop.org/recount to sign up for a recount volunteer shift today, and if you can, donateto help us fund the staff and resources we need to protect our movement.

Now, this is one more thing Trump can “fix” after he takes the Oath!

To see to it that every state in the Union NOT allow any candidate/other person, in or out of the state, to file anything (IF) they are in the following groups:
    1. Will change the outcome!
    2. Not actually “aggrieved!”
    3. The party/candidate can’t pull in about 10% or more of the votes!
    4. Other…with an asterick, to allow for unforseen circumstances!
