    Regarding protection from School Shootings:

I am now retired, but the company I worked for, from (at least) the day I started in February 1987 to this very day had, and still has, a simple security system at the front door that in my opinion, had it been in place for the Florida (or any other) school shooting, would have prevented the shooter from entering the building and saved many lives.

It is a one time expense to install the system. It does not require “concealed carry”, armed military, civilian, or police guards and the expense of hiring these people to patrol the hallways everyday. It does not require arming teachers and sending/paying them for gun training, although any of these things could certainly be done as well if thought necessary.

I believe it is a common system, used in many businesses, factories, warehouses etc., and to me it is a no-brainer that it should be installed in every school in North America.

Actually, I’m surprised that the manufacturers of these systems are not falling all over themselves right now to get the contract to install the system in every school on the continent. If it was my business that’s what I would be doing, and my company’s share price would be going to the moon if I landed the contract.

Basically, the system is a door, a card reader, and a “Cardkey” or “Passkey”.

    – The door can’t be opened without a cardkey

    – A cardkey is activated and issued to each employee/student

    – The employee/student must swipe in with their cardkey to enter the building and swipe out to leave

    – If the employee/student is fired/expelled the cardkey can be confiscated and/or deactivated

    – The now former employee/student cannot reenter the building ie. to shoot people, because their cardkey has been confiscated and/or deactivated (see previous point)

    – A secondary door for emergency exiting of the building is beside the cardkey door. It can only be opened from the inside. When it is opened it closes and locks automatically. Where I worked it was hooked to a buzzer that sounded when it was opened so the door would be checked if the buzzer went off. A teacher or designated hall monitor could perform this function

    – A phone with a list of employee phone numbers or contact’s extensions is provided outside the door for guests/visitors to call their contact person or the office/reception desk to be let in

    – It’s an easy system to implement and use. If small children need help, a teacher or hall monitor could be at the door to assist them. Once you get doing it it’s easy and you don’t give it a thought anymore when you swipe in/out

ADT and other companies make/install them – just Google “card key systems” and take it from there . . .

Back to the drawing board . . .

All shooter would have to do is steal someone else’s card and he’s in!
