Snowden: ‘Lies’ from Gang of 8 ‘Compelled Me to Act’

Edward Snowden says “lies” from the Gang of 8 are part of the reason he felt “compelled … to act.” He made the statement in response to a question about his motivations in releasing classified information on the Guardian‘s website.

“I imagine everyone’s experience is different, but for me, there was no single moment. It was seeing a continuing litany of lies from senior officials to Congress – and therefore the American people – and the realization that that Congress, specifically the Gang of Eight, wholly supported the lies that compelled me to act. Seeing someone in the position of James Clapper – the Director of National Intelligence – baldly lying to the public without repercussion is the evidence of a subverted democracy. The consent of the governed is not consent if it is not informed,” Snowden writes.

It is not clear if Snowden is referring here to the Gang of 8 tackling immigration reform, or some other Gang of 8.

Here’s the question Snowden is answering, “My question: given the enormity of what you are facing now in terms of repercussions, can you describe the exact moment when you knew you absolutely were going to do this, no matter the fallout, and what it now feels like to be living in a post-revelation world? Or was it a series of moments that culminated in action? I think it might help other people contemplating becoming whistleblowers if they knew what the ah-ha moment was like. Again, thanks for your courage and heroism.”

    NSA leaker Edward Snowden, answering questions in a live blog on his revelations about the top-secret agency, said Monday that the U.S. government “is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me.”

    “Truth is coming, and it cannot be stopped,” Snowden wrote, according to The Guardian, which held the live blog on its website.

    I’ve read where the “chain-gang” of (8) don’t have the necessary 60 votes to prank everyone off with, yet! So they’re still soliciting votes from any Patriot in Congress.

    No Patriot should vote for this treasonous piece of garbage! This vote will divide the WHEAT from the SHAFF!-(SP).

    America needs to become aware of who is voting for this damnedable (sp. This will come back to haunt them next time there’s an election! Cause this vote will be broadcast everywhere in America!

    These days, Rand Paul can often be heard saying that the Republican party needs to become competitive in “the West and New England,” and that the more libertarian brand of Republican politics that he represents will help make that possible.

    In 2008, Democrats and Independents voted for Obama, believing that, in voting against Bush’s Republicans, they were voting against crony corporatism (remember Halliburton, corporate bailouts?), wars of choice (Iraq) and the take down of our civil rights (Patriot Act). Two years ago, a huge number of them realized that not only did their vote fail to stop any of these, but Obama was a kind of Bush-plus, extending and even deepening illiberal policy in all of these areas. As recent revelations about America’s massive surveillance state have revealed, they were right.

    Many of these disillusioned Obama voters came to understand that the real problem was bigger than one party or the other, one president or another, but that, “the presuppositions of the system,” as Noam Chomsky calls them, ensure that the state, under control of either party, consistently and increasingly acts at the expense of our basic individual liberties, Bill of Rights be damned. Thousands of these voters chose to stay true to their liberal principles by becoming (often for the first time in their lives) signed-up Republicans to support Ron Paul in his run for the presidency. In an article that I wrote at the time, I called them “Blue Republicans.” The article went viral and the term caught on, leading to the setting up of a Facebook group, the design and distribution of Blue Republican marketing materials aimed at liberals, and even all kinds of guerrilla marketing, such as the surreptitious hanging of banners over Californian freeways, and so on.

    Patrick Duffy you are right on.
    Rand/Ron Paul are the perfect example of the illusion. There is one person in this country who have stand for 5 years with the same message: Corruption, top down inside out. I only believe in Dr Orly Taitz. She is our George’ Washington and her supporters are the soldiers without boots marching along.
    As John Adams said: Stand for EQUAL justice because one day you might be innocent. We have 536 persons in a position of power who brake the law everyday. Who is running the court?

I am beginning to think this is a fact, expecially the four or five times I have tried to type this, and it gets censored and wiped out, except for the last time. I firt saw this, I think,on UTUBE.

    I totally agree with everyone. This young man who come forward as far as I a concerned is a hero. This Gang of Eight especially the Republicans should be impeached. Marco Rubio lied to the American people and especially the people that elected him. This is the reason I have changed my party affiliation to Independent. Although after Barack Obama I could never vote for any Democrat. They always vote along party lines no matter if it is the right thing to do for the country or not. Now I am finding out that our government if trying to exempt themselves out of ObamaCare. If this happens I thing we all need to go to Washington. I am ready I just need a ride.
