Dear Republican Leaders of California,
A few days ago, I was forwarded an e-mail from U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken. In her note she announced that her first action if elected to the U.S. Senate would be to repeal Obamacare. Well I couldn’t agree more, this is a great idea. So I decided to take a closer look into her and what an eye-opener my research turned up.
To start, it’s documented by her campaign that she was an “activist” with the organization Autism Speaks. But it really turns out she was not just an activist, she was actually their top paid Lobbyist and her group Autism Speaks supports Obamacare.
To see if Ms. Emken was genuine about her claim to repealing Obamacare I dug further into her work history for Autism Speaks.
Before I go on, I must state that I believe autism is a devastating disorder; I commend Ms. Emken for fighting for her son. It isn’t surprising that she fought for her child. What was shocking was that she would blatantly lie to Republican voters like me about herself in her campaign.
When I discovered the facts about Ms. Emken I couldn’t help but wonder if she was the second coming of Barack Obama… a flip-flopper say-one-thing and do-another politician.
Here’s what I learned:
Ms. Emken was listed as Autism Speaks leading Lobbyist in the years 2008 and 2009. In 2008 Autism Speaks was spending $280,000.00 annually on lobbying. The very next year (2009) under Emken’s direction, Autism Speaks hiked their lobbying to $740,000.00. In 2008 Emken collected a tidy $143,276.00 in compensation from the organization and earned another $8,210.00 of estimated compensation from related organizations. In 2009, Emken took home $152,120.00 in reported income and another $5,444.00 in compensation from other organizations.[1] According to OpenSecrets, Emken was Autism Speaks top Lobbyist in 2008 and 2009.
I’m not concerned as much that Ms. Emken was a Lobbyist fighting for legislation to help her son and others suffering from autism. But it is disconcerting that she has lied about it and it’s very troubling, even hypocritical, when Ms. Emken tells me she believes in free market principles and that government run health care is not the solution as she asserted in the Flash Report in 2010 proclaiming, “’We can provide a free market solution to health care and ensure the greatest medical system in the world continues to thrive. I will fight for that, just as I have for the last 13 years. Unlike Nancy Pelosi and Jerry McNerney I understand government run health care is not the solution.” Though this is a powerful sound-bite for unknowing Republican voters, the real truth can be seen in her actions as a professional Lobbyist.
During her time at Autism Speaks, Emken successfully forced private insurance companies to “provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary treatments including behavioral therapies…” in 15 states. (Here’s a link to see more about the specifics of autism speaks legislation.)
I ask, Isn’t forcing private insurance companies to provide certain services through a legislative mandate completely contradictory to the idea of “a free market solution to health care” philosophy as Ms. Emken claims she advocates?
Here is a specific example making it clear how Ms. Emken applauded the passage of government mandates on private insurance companies only to flip-flop now in an effort to appease the Republican base. Pennsylvania passed (HB 1150), which created a new “Autism Spectrum Disorders Coverage”… This provision forces private insurers to provide up to $36,000.00 annually for essential treatments for individuals with autism.
In a press release from Autism Speaks (here’s a copy of the press release) Emken is quoted …”Speaker O’Brien’s tremendous leadership has brought us to the brink of an important legislative breakthrough,” said Elizabeth Emken, Autism Speaks vice president of government relations. …”the fact is that the private health insurance system must begin to absorb some of this expense. A victory here in Pennsylvania will hopefully serve as a blueprint for similar legislative action in other states across the country.” (Autism Speaks website press link)
How is it possible for Ms. Emken to applaud the legislation of Pennsylvania and 14 other states forcing mandates on private insurance companies and then upon deciding to run for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate tell us the free market is the only way to ensure competitiveness in the health industry? I haven’t seen this much flip flopping since my last fishing trip on the Mississippi!
If this is all that California has to offer Republican voters, we are in for another 6 years of liberal Dianne Feinstein. By-the-way, it only took me a couple of hours on my computer to find all of this information on Ms. Emken; I can’t imagine what resources Dianne Feinstein has.
California’s Republican Party will not survive if Elizabeth Emken is leading the charge. She is just another paid Lobbyist who plays the political game and undermines our free market Republican values.
As a newcomer to this state and for the sake of California I ask that we find a real Republican candidate who will not flip-flop on the issues, and will stand up for what they truly believe in. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words, and Ms. Emken’s actions are extremely hard to ignore.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
A concerned Republican, Jean Ector
