Thank you very much for contacting me regarding President Obama’s nationality and eligibility to hold the Presidency. It is good to hear from you.

After many pundits, politicians, and everyday citizens called for investigation into President Obama’s background, more specifically his nationality, the White House released his official long-form birth certificate on April 27, 2011. While I believe that this issue was handled poorly by this Administration, I do believe that this is a legitimate document and that he is a natural born citizen.

This debate has led to calls for his resignation or impeachment. To give you some background on this procedure, it was established in the United States Constitution that the Legislative Branch could impeach and then remove the President, Vice President, and other high-level Executive Branch officials if they were found to be guilty of “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Once the House of Representatives drafts articles of impeachment, the procedure then moves to the Senate where the official must undergo an impeachment trial. Only two Presidents have been impeached in the history of our country: President Andrew Johnson and President William Clinton. Neither of these trials ended up with the removal of the President.

Rest assured I am willing and required to uphold the Constitution of the United States not only through my own personal actions, but also in ensuring that other federal officials do so as well. For this reason, should any articles of impeachment ever be drafted for any Executive Branch official, I will assuredly consider all facts and details before making a decision.
