Hi Orly,
While researching on the vulnerabilities of the Sequoia Voting machines used in the CA elections, I came upon a scathing security evaluation report about the Sequoia voting machines, prepared by a UC Santa Barbara team that was commissioned by the CA SOS office. This report is available on the CA SOS website.
But before I go into the details of the security evaluation report, let me also point to something that I found from Wikipedia, regarding the ownership of the Sequoia voting systems:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoia_Voting_Systems
As you can see at the end of the wiki page, Sequoiua is currently owned by SVS Holdings, after being sold by Smartmatic. However, the CEO of Sequoia and SVS Holdings is Jack Blaine, a former Smartmatic executive. So, technically Sequoia is not owned by the Venezuelan company Smartmatic, but the handover to SVS Holdings, run by a former Sequoia executive, may be the only backdoor entry our corrupt Treasury Department found to hide the Venezuelan link.
Now, coming to the Sequoia Voting Systems security evaluation report, it is available at the CA SOS website, via the following link:
https://www.sos.ca.gov/voting-systems/oversight/ttbr/red-sequoia.pdf
If you are unable to download the document (since being an https link, it is supposed to be password protected, but I don’t know why it is not), please let me know. I have saved a copy of the report on my PC.
OK, here are the major vulnerabilities that are described in this report:
1. The most serious vulnerabilities are in WinEDS software application that is used to prepare the election definition and ballot definition files and also to tabulate and report the results. As described in the report, this application can be easily infected with a trojan virus that can be replicated across the system. The trojan could be used to change the ballot definition files and also be used to change the tabulation results. The trojan can be designed to avoid detection in the ìLogic and Accuracy Test (LAT) modeî of the equipment. This can change the outcome of the entire election.
2. There are various ways described about forging Update Cards and Voter Cards, used by the system.
3. Network security vulnerabilities of the WinEDS system and the associated SQL server are also described.
4. Please be sure to check out the various attack scenarios described in section 5.
Considering all the above issues with the Sequoia voting systems, I would think that the SOS office would not let these machines be used in the election process, without fixing the problems. This report was prepared in 2007 and so, I am not sure if the above issues have been resolved, yet.
To make sure that the voting machines recorded and tabulated the votes correctly, you may want to demand a Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_Verified_Paper_Audit_Trail) report, which we know was generated, atleast in the San francisco County, as per the following memo:
https://www.sfelections.org/ec/?p=150
Also, I found that this time around incorrect mail-in ballots were delivered to thousands of San Francisco voters, as described in the following report:
https://www.sfexaminer.com/local/New-mail-in-ballots-may-be-sent-out-after-blunder-94363109.html
I am not sure, if the above issue was completely addressed, before the mail-in deadline.
Also, I saw another report, yesterday about some voting problems in the Nevada county. I don’t have the time now to search for that report, since I got to rush to work. You may want to search for it online.
Hope the above info helps with any legal challenges that you may want to file, after the official primary election results are announced.
Thanks and Regards,
Ned
