While tentative results are out, 4,700 ballots still need to be counted for Tuesday’s primary election.
It’s typical to have that many ballots left after an election, said Registrar of Voters Dolores Provencio. However, it’s a raw number and some of those may not be qualified ballots.
Damaged ballots and some of the absentee ones will be counted today, but an update on results may not come until Friday or Monday, she said.
The Elections Office is “tallying them as quickly as possible,” Provencio said.
Those ballots left to be counted could affect some of the races, especially those that are Valleywide, Provencio said. Some city elections, like Westmorland with one precinct, have fewer ballots from that area.
“Nevertheless, each vote makes a difference,” Provencio said. “It will definitely add some votes to many of the races.”
One race that could change is IID Division 3, in which Matt Dessert is within 100 votes of being the winner without a November runoff. After all the precincts were counted, the results had Dessert at 49.19 percent with 5,065 votes. Rudy Maldonado followed with 26.42 percent and 2,720 votes.
Maldonado said he was concerned over the remaining ballots, and he’s on “pins and needles” waiting for the final results.
Overall he said he thought the voter turnout would be low, which it was with just more than 20 percent of voters heading to the polls. It’s a worst nightmare scenario when a candidate campaigns Valleywide, but few go to the polls.
The provisional, vote-by-mail and damaged ballots could potentially change the race, and it will all come down to the final vote, Maldonado said.
Dessert did not return calls by press time.
